Although grouting is a small part of a tile project, it is an important aspect worth contemplating.

This page will describe how grout colors and grout joint sizing can affect a tile project.

Grout Joint Size

  The size of the grout joint significantly affects both the installation and the final outcome.

  Smaller grout joints create a higher difficulty of installation.  The surface area being tiled must be a smooth plane, otherwise it is extremely hard to not have lip-page. 

  Generally speaking, the smallest grout joints for tiles greater than 6 inches is 1/8".  This is the typical joint for professionals to use, but may represent a huge challenge for amateurs.   Tiles under 6 inches can have joints as small as 1/16".

Grout Color

  Grout color can accomplish a few things.  It can accent the tile, or it can accent the grout and pattern.  Here is an explanation of how this is accomplished:

• Grout color that blends with the tile will accent the tile and not the grout joints.   Ex. Dark gray tile with dark gray grout
• Grout color that is a shade lighter or darker will accent the grout joints and pattern of the tile.  Ex. Dark gray tile with light gray grout.
