Grouting 101

Grouting tile is a very simple process that can be a quick procedure or can be torturous.  Following a step-by-step process can help you accomplish this, but professional assistance is always the best tool.

These two pictures are the before and after shots of a professional grout job.  Notice that there is no grout haze after grouting.

Grout Installation

  1. Make sure all tile is set and ready to be grouted.
  2. Clean area thoroughly by sweeping and sponge wiping.  Clear thin-set and any other foreign material from the grout joints.
  3. Tape off the ceiling, carpet, un-finished woodwork or any other material that will be stained by the grout.
  4. Mix grout to a mixture slightly thinner than peanut butter.  Wait 5 minutes and mix again.  NOTE: The consistency of the grout is very important.  It should be able to be spread easily enough and not dry too quickly.
  5. Fill a 5 gallon pail 2/3rd full with clean water.
  6. Get clean sponge, rubber gloves and rubber grout float.

  1. Use rubber float to spread and push the grout into the joints spreading it diagonally across the tiles.   Be sure to remove excess grout for the surface of the tiles to ease wiping.
  2. Spread grout for 15-30 minutes (depending on dry time), then stop and wipe clean.  Use sponge by wiping diagonally across tiles.  Do not press down with the sponge.  This will remove grout from the joints.  Wipe the tiles clean.  Repeat this step until the area is grouted.
  3. Get a fresh bucket of clean water and wipe the tiles again, this time paying attention to the consistency of the grout joints.
  4. Wipe a third time if necessary.
  5. Use a dry towel or rag to buff the tiles clean.
  6. Use silicon to seal corners of showers or bathtubs.
  7. After 3 days, seal the grout to protect against staining.
