Installing tile in your shower is a great way to produce a natural oasis in your bathroom.  Today, there is need for more storage in the shower for all the products available. 

This is where an inset shelf comes in.  An inset shelf creates storage space without losing any shower space.  This shelf is set into the cavity of the wall in the shower.  Here are some pictures and examples of how to install these.

Design and Orientation

Typically an inset shelf has a width of about 14.5" the distance between studs in the wall.  However, they can be made wider with a little framing work.

The height can be adjusted for design or to fit larger volumes of product.   Typically, the height will be at least 13" in order to fit most shampoo bottles.

Shelving

Instead of making two separate inset shelve, one option is to make one tall inset shelf and to use a single tile in the middle as a shelf.  Glass can be used as well.

Installation

Proper installation of an inset shelf is very important.  Water is the root of all evil in a household, as with an inset shelf.   It is imperative to seal the inset shelf from permeation to water.  This can be done several ways:

• Use a plastic pre-made inset piece.
• Install a waterproof membrane on top of the cement-board in the opening.
