Tile Countertops

Many types of tile are great for counter-tops.  These include granite, marble, porcelain, and natural stone.  The most popular materials are granite and natural stone.  These types of tile can be researched on our tile descriptions page.  Below is an example of how a tile counter-top would be formed.

These two counter-tops are made from natural stone.  The one on the left is a travertine limestone tile and the one on the right is a marble tile.

Installing a Tile Counter-top

Installation of tile is a very important aspect of bathroom remodeling or remodeling in general.  When done correctly, a good tile job can last as long as the house.  Proper installation deals with all the layers of materials associated with the area being remodeled.  The following are steps involved in preparation for a tile counter-top:

  • Install the vanity
  • Purchase the sink
  • Determine the location of the sink and the size of the cutout.
  • Purchase tile and grout.

Proper tile installation has to do with two main ideas:

No Movement – the counter-top must be solid and not deflect or will pop tiles.

Adhesion – the tiles must be secured to the preparation materials with the proper thin-set to avoid cracking or popping.

The proper counter-top base will be 1" to 1-1/4".  This usually consists of a base of 3/4" melamine board topped with 1/4" to 1/2" backer-board.  All seams should be taped with fiberglass mesh reinforcement.

Sealing a Counter-top

The grout needs to be fully cured before the sealer can be applied.  This is generally done about 3 days after grouting.

Ceramic and porcelain tile doesn't need to be sealed, but all natural stones do.  These include: travertine, limestone, slate, quartzite, granite and marble.

There are two different types of sealer for tile and grout.

 1. Matte sealer that doesn't change the appearance of the tile/grout once applied.

 2. Enhancer sealer does what its name suggests and enhances or brings out the color in the tile/grout.
