Tile Floors

Versaille pattern of natural stone tile in master bathroom in Blaine, MN.

A tile floor is a natural feel and look to finish a room.  It doesn't matter where that room is or what function it serves.  Tile is simply a beautiful and practical product.

The only caution is to uphold variety in your house.  Don't tile your entire house, and then again don't put carpet everywhere. The best home includes different flooring to accomodate each room.  Read more about flooring options here, otherwise read about tile flooring options below:

Patterns and DesignsPinwheel Tile Pattern on a Bathroom Floor in Burnsville, MN

When choosing what type of tile, pattern or design, it is best to think about the entire room in general.  The functions, practicality and style.

A tile floor will last longer than every other material in the room.  It is best to consider the tile when deciding a style or theme to the room.  Old fashion, modern?

Here are some patterns:

Old Fashion Patterns:

  • Subway/Brick Pattern - The next row of tile is off-set half a tile to create a brick pattern.
  • Standard - The essence of the tile name.  Stacked perfectly aligned to create a uniform crossing of grout joints.
  • Versaille Pattern - Old style variation pattern involving many different sized tile to create a complex pattern.

Modern Patterns:

  •  1/3 Brick Pattern - spin off of traditional brick pattern only the off-set is 1/3rd of the tile or some variation.
  • Pinwheel Pattern - involves two tile size, one big, one small.  A great way to switch patterns between floor and walls.
  • Consistently Random Variation - Combining a number of tiles that variate in size to complete a consistent look.
  • Clipped Corners - Smaller tiles are inserted diagonally into corners of larger tiles.

Sub-Floor MaterialsPreparing a shower and bathroom floor for ceramic tile in Minneapolis, MN How to prepare your floor for tile?

Many homeowners ponder this question, and the sad truth is that many contractors ponder this question too.

Since tile has been invented, it has been installed in a gross variety of methods.  Depending on the climate, tile will be installed differently.

Conventional Installation:

This type refers to the thick mud set installation that is seen in most homes before the 1980's, and some beyond.   This installation technique involves more on-site labor and less pre-fab material cost.  However, it does produce a height difference between a tile floor and a carpet floor, to where the carpet floor has to have a layer of flooring added to equal the height.

Modern Installation:

This type may refer to many different installation types.  To be honest, only a professional familiar with the area's variations and design will know the best way to proceed.  Always consult a professional to see your options.
