Tile Shower Pans

There is nothing like a complete tile shower.  The natural beauty sets a good feeling and creates an oasis type atmosphere.  Tiling a shower is a difficult task that requires special treatment pertaining to water.  If a pan is installed incorrectly, not only will it ruin your shower, it can wreck nearby areas of your home.   Below is a step-by-step guide to a traditional tile shower.

Tile shower waterproof membrane installation by a pro tile contractor in Edina Preparing the shower walls with cementboard by a Roseville tile contractor. A shower prepped for tile with a waterproof membrane in Minneapolis, MN

These showers were prepared by Archway Contracting for tile installation by using the standard technique with a waterproof membrane.  These were professionally installed by the tile contractor in Blaine and Edina, MN.

This is a typical installation pattern and is subject to variations based on the manufacturers of the products used in installation.  Always read and follow the manufacturer’s guidelines.

Installation Steps

  1. Check the shower area.  Make sure the floor is made with exterior grade plywood or equivalent.  Check framing for stability.
  2. Install rough plumbing for the shower fixtures and install a tile drain to accommodate a shower membrane.
  3. Install a 2 x 6 to form the outside of the curb/shower.
  4. Staple down plastic or wire mesh to the floor.
  5. Pour tile-crete or equivalent for first slope at ¼” per foot towards drain.
  6. Install waterproof membrane at least 6” up the wall.  Do not cut  corners.

  1. Attach the shower drain and seal connection with the liner.
  2. Install the cement board on the walls.  Do not screw lower than six from the floor, because this will ruin your liner.
  3. Pour the final slope of the shower pan at least ¾” thick.
  4. Form the inside of the curb using 2 x 4’s.
  5. Pour curb using the tile-crete.
  6. Remove all 2 x4’s and let dry.
  7. Install the tile after 24-48 hours depending on drying time. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines.
  8. Install grout after tile is fully set.  This timeline will depend on the type of thin-set.  Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines.
  9. Grout may then be sealed after 36 hours.  Again, follow the manufacturer’s guidelines.
